Is Brushing for You?

Brushing is about a lot more than detangling your hair, but that’s a good place to start! It’s actually the first step in cleansing the hair and scalp. Brushing removes oils, product, and dead skin cells before you even get to shampooing.

Most hair types can be brushed, but you have to do it with the right tool and with great care. It’s more about the how than the hair type.

How to brush?

Begin at the ends of the hair, working your way up to the root as you detangle.  The denser and/or curlier the hair, the smaller the section at a time. For very curly hair, wider, more flexible bristles or teeth are recommended.

Work from the bottom up and around your head until every section has been fully detangled.

Once the brush slides through with ease, you can begin brushing from the scalp. *Some very tight curl patterns or overly chemically processed hair may continue to resist brushing through. In this case, you can section similarly but just make small, short brush strokes at the scalp to #exfoliate and relieve tension. Brush in any and all directions. As long as the hair isn’t tangling up or resisting the brush, you can move in any way that feels good.

Why brush?

  • exfoliate the scalp

  • increase blood flow

  • help move natural oils down the hair shaft

  • extend the shampoo cycle

  • release scalp tension

Brush, breathe, release; it’s as simple as that.
